When we first saw the Fitzherbert Castle Motel, we loved the fact it was actually like a castle. It had real personality. It was different.

The Fitzherbert Castle motel was built in 1987 and we took it over at the beginning of 2010. Right away, we knew that we needed to make it even more different. We needed to create the sort of motel where we would have wanted to stay.

Although we hadn’t worked in the hospitality industry before, we had been lucky enough to take time away from our jobs as a secretary and as the owner of an electrical business. Our regular trips gave us a great insight into the good, and the not-so-good qualities of motels.

When we bought the motel, we took what we had seen in other places and set about making the Fitzherbert Castle much more comfortable for guests:

• We introduced chocolates and Fairtrade coffee
• Installed Sky decoders and great quality 32” TVs in each of our 14 rooms
• Perfected the art of cooking a great breakfast that could be delivered to guests in their own bedrooms
• And we vowed to be as friendly as possible
